First Snowflakes In Bar Harbor Bring About That Holiday FeelingWritten by Quimby House Inn & Spa
There is nothing I enjoy more every year than the first snowfall of winter. Bar Harbor is so quiet during the first storm, especially in the evening, like the snow has muted the world. Looking out from out front windows you see a car go by every once in awhile, sloshing through the snow. It gives me that holiday feeling, like what you had the day before Christmas when you were a little kid. So much excitement and anxiety about the arrival of Christmas and the warm fuzzy feelings of the holiday spirit.
Every season in Bar Harbor is magical. But Bar Harbor in the winter is amazing. It’s so quiet, and the locals feel like they’ve finally got their little treasure back to themselves. Summer visitors have mostly gone back to their home states, and Bar Harbor has lost that exciting summery feel. Instead it has a wonderful holiday feeling in the air; you can buy Christmas trees along the main street from the local boy scout troop, Santa will be arriving at the Village Green any day now to greet all the town children, and holiday shopping is in full swing in the dozen local shops that are still open.
A decade ago, the town was even quieter at this time of year. Less folks stayed in town during the winter and fewer shops and restaurants remained open because there just wasn’t enough business to be had in the winter in Bar Harbor. Now that’s no longer the case: Bar Harbor has a larger year-round population and more people have discovered the beauty of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park under the snow. And now that more people are staying in Bar Harbor, restaurants and shops are staying open later into the year, and the town feels even more alive in the winter.
